Ethos Jazz Ensemble Audition Requirements
The Ethos Jazz Ensemble audition will consist of the following:
SAXOPHONES, TRUMPETS and TROMBONES
I. Prepared music: Candidates should plan on performing the prepared music. Brass players
desiring a lead chair should also prepare the lead trumpet/ lead trombone prepared music
(page two of audition music).

II. Improvisation: Candidates will solo over two choruses of Blues in F (from Jamey
Aebersold’s “Volume 1: How to Play Jazz and Improvise.”)
III. Scales: Candidates playing sax, trumpet and trombone will be asked to play 2 major
scales and chromatic scale. (Any of the 12 major scales could be asked).
IV. Sightreading: Candidates will be asked to sightread 1 to 3 selections. These will be
provided at the audition.
PIANO and GUITAR
Play prepared piece.
2017 Etudes have not been chosen
Play Chord Changes for 2 Choruses of F or Bb Blues.
Improvise on 2 choruses of F Blues accompanying yourself or along with recorded
accompaniment provided at audition.
Play sight reading selected at the audition. Be prepared to read notes and/or chord

Walk a bassline on a Blues F (2 choruses)
Play sight reading selected at the audition . Be prepared to read notes and/or chord changes.
DRUM SET REQUIREMENTS
Play (2017 Drum Etude has not been chosen)
Prepare the following styles : Swing w/ sticks and brushes, Jazz Waltz, Shuffle, Eight note
Rock, 16th Note Rock (Funk), and Latin (Samba). The Basic Jazz Drumbeats may be used as
a guideline. Be able to play styles in 2,4 or 8 bar phrases with a fill at the end of each phrase.
STYLES MUST BE MEMORIZED.
